Open or uncovered gutters can overflow for many reasons: the gutter may be not be sloped properly; leaves and needles may have formed a clog inside one of the downspout elbows; the downspouts may be too small in size; or there may be too few downspouts to handle the volume of water filling the gutters.
Too often shingles extend too far into the gutter so run off from a steep roof may simply shoot right over the top of the gutter. Gutter cleaners or cleaning services can’t diagnose issues like this. They see their job as ‘clean and go.’
It doesn’t take much to clog an open gutter even after it’s just been cleaned out. Only minutes after cleaning, needles or leaves may fall and start to accumulate again at the mouth of the downspout. A single leaf from a magnolia tree can be twice as wide as the largest residential downspout opening. Sycamore leaves can attain mammoth proportions (pictured above) – they can measure over 12 inches across. The gutter may look OK from the ground, but just one of these leaves can plug any size downspout.
Leaf Guards are at work for you 24/7. No amount of cleaning can match that. This is why NC Gutter Guys, Inc. recommends leaf guards on all gutters.
